Fraser Fir Christmas Tree Farm in Virginia

About the Schoolhouse Farm

Our Christmas Tree arm is at 3000 feet elevation which is necessary to grow premium Fraser Fir Christmas trees. Shade and Suzanne Mecum bought the farm in 1992. Local people know it as the farm where those crazy people moved the old 100 year old farm house across the road and up on the hill. The farm also has a one-room schoolhouse built in 1870, right after the civil war. This school was in use until 1941 when a new school was built about five miles away. Since that time, it has been a post office, a hardware store and antiques furniture restoration shop.

Shortly after moving the farm house, we planted 6000 Fraser Fir Christmas trees and started our Christmas tree adventure. It is hard work. The trees must be planted on the side of a hill and all the work of weed control, fertilizing, and shearing requires going up and down with 50 pound sprayer and a lot of perseverance. We had help, but we experienced the hard work and patience required to grow these beautiful trees.
